With the upcoming release of the next instalment in my young adult action adventure series Tawny & Cree: Amazonian Blood, I realised there are some questions I had to address.
Why the Gap?
Well, it is a fair question. The first in the series Tawny & Cree: Beasts of Dropull realised in 2021 and the follow-up Tawny & Cree: Schinas Saga in 2023, but then I stopped, despite having written the next one. Part of it was life, having started full-time work, I found less time to write in general and when I started teaching, it became my focus, my writing floating to the back of mind for a few months. Then there was also what I was focussing on, mainly my then girlfriend and now wife, we were long distance and every moment away from her was like another hammer strike on the nail in my heart; writing wasn’t a priority. Last, to continue publishing, I had to pay money and I didn’t want to continue doing that. I didn’t stop writing, I wrote many other stories and even published one of them (A Love Competition Season 12). I think for me, 2024 has just been a year where my focus has shifted back to writing. This year I published the book mentioned previously, released my website and have been writing like I never have before in my life. Now just seems right, I never wanted to abandon Tawny & Cree and I think the fitting end to a year where my focus has returned to my writing is to bring it back.
What inspired you to write Tawny & Cree in the first place?
At some point I may write in more detail about the six and a half years I spent working for a certain supermarket chain, stacking shelves, going home for the night and then restacking the same shelves, where I used to create stories to overcome the mind-numbing activity. One such story was not Tawny & Cree but what would become it after a long digestion process. The original story I had created was a group of six high school friends who each become cursed to turn into a mythical creature when it turned night and during the day, they had these half forms. There was a spider woman and a vampire and a zombie and, obviously, a minotaur. The original story was going to be an anime, not a book and it was not until one day after work when I was in the shower, I thought of the minotaur character and then in my mind formed what would be the plot for Beasts of Dropull.
Who Would Like it?
I am tempted to write everyone, but obviously not everyone. It is targeted at young adults who enjoy action adventure and uses Greek Mythology as a base and inspiration. It is also what I would define as an easy read, that is, it is written for people who would not want to read a novel or would like an easy entry into reading, without having to read children’s books.
How Long Is It?
Short, novella length.
Is Cree A Girl?
It might seem like an odd question, but it is one that needs to be answered. There have been two occasions where Cree has been assumed to be a girl. The first was by a reviewer that I paid for who wrote that my story was about two independent women, which seems odd considering Cree is a man. Then there was a rumour started at my workplace that Tawny and Cree were lesbian lovers. Again, odd considering Cree is a man. Perhaps I should ignore these areas of confusion, as they were made by people who clearly did not read my work (though I would have expected the reviewer to read it at least), but I still feel the need to make it completely clear for everyone. So, no, Cree is male.
